Woman found dead in dumpster behind Iron Mountain Goodwill died by asphyxiation

IRON MOUNTAIN, Mich. (CBS 58) -- A woman who climbed  into a dumpster behind a Goodwill Store accidentally died after becoming trapped.

The Iron Mountain Police Department was called to Goodwill for a report of a deceased person that was located shortly before 9 a.m. on November 6.

The body was found in a large dumpster behind the building.

The investigation revealed that the woman entered the dumpster on her own and was searching for items she wanted to re-purpose. While doing so, the woman slipped and fell head first into an open area within the garbage.

The open area was approximately five feet deep and inside the dumpster.

Preliminary cause of death pending toxicology results has been ruled Accidental Positional Asphyxiation.

The woman has been identified as 59-year-old Shelley Bowman from Iron Mountain.
