'This is our little Rome': Milwaukee parishioners mourn Pope Francis and pray for the conclave
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Just days away from the papal conclave, the world continues to mourn the loss of Pope Francis.
Milwaukee is among many cities in the world paying tribute, holding a memorial Mass in Pope Francis' honor.
"We couldn’t go to Rome, that would have been a bit far and kind of fast to get there. So, this is our little Rome today," said parishioner Elizabeth Long. "The gathering of people who really appreciated the pope for being everyone's priest."
Parishioners across the city of Milwaukee gathered in prayer and song at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, to remember Pope Francis and his lasting legacy on the Catholic church.
"I think Pope Francis was a breath of fresh air to our church," said parishioner John Wolfe. "He's going to be missed greatly. I love what he did for social justice and the environment. That’s what we need."
"He really saw everyone, and I think that’s why we really love Pope Francis," said parishioners Elizabeth and Brian Long. "He exemplified humility, which I think is just beautiful."
Archbishop Jeffrey Grob of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee says, while controversial at times, Pope Francis made history as he labored tirelessly until the last day of his life. He says he worked to make the church home for everyone.
"As our shepherd Pope Francis… many people feel a loss with his passing," said Archbishop Grob.
Meeting Pope Francis in 2022, Archbishop Grob says it was a privilege to hold a memorial Mass and keep his memory alive.
"He was the one that appointed me as a bishop, and then in turn, last year received the call from the Nuncio on his behalf to say that I've been appointed as archbishop for Milwaukee," said Archbishop Grob. "So, he's very much shaped my life as a bishop up to this point for over the course of the last five years."
Catholics said their emotional final goodbyes, mourning the pope while also praying for a successful conclave.
"I pray that his successor will be in line with him, because the things that he has done for our church, I think, is great," said parishioner Amy Janusz.
The conclave to choose the new pope will start Wednesday, May 7.
