MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) – A 69-year-old woman died after being hit by a car Sunday afternoon in Milwaukee.
Authorities say it happened around 3 p.m. near Green Bay and Glendale.
Investigators say a car driven by a 23-year-old failed to stop at a light and hit the victim's car. She was taken to a hospital where she later died from her injuries.
The victim has been identified as Jeri Waldman.
The 23-year-old driver stayed at the scene and was taken into custody.
Wanda Baylis lives off the intersection and says she rushed to Waldman to feel for a pulse on the victim. There was no response.
"All I can see is her face and I just wish I could've done more," Baylis said.
Neighbors say a tragedy like this was bound to happen the way people drive on Green Bay Avenue. Multiple complained of drivers speeding and ignoring traffic signals.
"I worry about the safety of my daughter,” said Dan Lozoff, Waldman’s next door neighbor. “I don't want her anywhere near that area by herself."
Lozoff has lived next door to Waldman for five years.
He says she was a consummate neighbor who had a special relationship with his daughter.
"Just a gentle soul,” Lozoff said. “Someone that never spoke ill of anybody never had a bad thing to say. Always had a smile on her face, had a really contagious laugh."
Police pulled over several vehicles near the intersection Monday afternoon.
Neighbors hope the vigilance lasts.
The investigation remains ongoing.
