MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office has officially identified the victim as 38-year-old Christopher White from Milwaukee.

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Family and friends are remembering a 38-year-old man killed in a late-night double shooting as someone who always put others first - gathering for a balloon release to honor his life and share new details about the challenges he overcame.

Milwaukee police say the shooting happened Friday night, April 11, near 11th and Atkinson.

Christopher White was killed at the scene. A 35-year-old, identified by loved ones as his full-time caregiver, was also shot and injured.

On Saturday evening, loved ones released balloons into the sky in tribute, reflecting on White’s life and legacy.

His mother, Erica White, said “He would give the shirt off his back to help the next person.”

Those closest to him say that generosity defined who he was someone who showed up for others no matter the circumstances.

His girlfriend, Tawana Brown, said White had already survived a previous shooting years ago that left him paralyzed.

“He got shot and paralyzed, and he’s just been around here doing everything for everybody,” she said.

Brown said that earlier shooting in the early 2000s led to White losing a leg and being confined to a wheelchair.

Despite that, she said he remained active in his community and supportive of those around him.

“I don’t know why they would do him like that. He was in a wheelchair, one leg, you didn’t have to kill him,” she said.

Brown added that friends and family did everything they could to support him.

“With him being bound to the wheelchair we still came through and helped him out and did everything that we could do for him, and I don’t know why anybody would just want to kill him like that,” she said.

Now, just days before what would have been his 39th birthday, loved ones are grieving and searching for answers.

White's family has started a GoFundMe to help with his memorial and funeral expenses which you can find here.

“I just pray for my family, his family, and hope everything will be alright,” Brown said.

Police say no arrests have been made as they continue to search for suspect(s).
