11-year-old Kenosha girl gives back to her community with coat drive
CBS 58 KENOSHA, Wis. (CBS 58) -- As the weather gets cold, lots of families are in need of a warm winter coat.
Thanks to an 11-year-old Kenosha girl, her community will have some help finding one.
Aviana Winberg started her coat drive fundraiser after making friends at weekly kids karaoke events. She says she felt a sense of joy being with people and wanted to share that joy through volunteering.
On Sunday, Nov. 30, the coat drive was held at Smarty's Sweets and Treats.
Through it's just the second year of the drive, they're seeing lots of success.
"Even though the weather is very bad right now, we've had a lot of people come in really in need of coats and we have gotten rid of almost half of our coats," said Aviana.
"If I say it, I'll cry. It fills my heart, it really does. I'm so proud of her," said Aviana's grandmother, Barb Winberg.
So, how much has Winberg raised this year?
She says people have donated more than $3,000 and collected about 500 coats.
The money donated will be used to buy even more coats for people who need them.
