12-year-old dies after firearm unintentionally discharges; Milwaukee woman arrested

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee police say a 12-year-old boy has died after a firearm unintentionally discharged Saturday afternoon, Sept. 24.

It happened near 43rd and College Avenue around 1:18 p.m. 

Authorities say the child obtained a gun that accidentally went off, striking him. The boy was taken to a local hospital for treatment, but later died of his injuries. 

A 33-year-old Milwaukee woman was arrested for leaving the firearm unattended. 

Police say criminal charges will be referred to the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office.

MPD would like to remind the public to secure firearms with a gunlock and store them out of the reach of children.
