MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A 15-year-old boy is charged with reckless homicide after a deadly hit-and-run that happened back on Oct. 3. The incident happened near Swing Park on Milwaukee’s east side.

Giovanni Pizarro – also known as Giovanni Martinez – was there hanging out with his friends when he was killed.

It’s been four months in his family's fight for answers.

“I pray for my Gio, and I miss him," Ana Martinez, Pizarro's grandmother, said.

She said learning about the death of the 23-year-old was a nightmare.

“We lost my grandson, we’ll never see him again," she added.

Milwaukee County authorities have charged a 15-year-old boy in the hit-and-run. CBS 58 is not naming the teen because he has not been charged as an adult.

According to court documents, Pizarro was killed after a fight at Swing Park. Police say the teen came to the park and took out a gun – believing someone stole his phone. They say he then got into a car and drove into the group.

“The devastation that this had caused our family will never go away," Maritza Larsen, Pizarro's mother, said.

She described him as kind, caring and independent. Now, she is helping raise his two-year-old son, Elijah.

“He was a protector and he would stand up for those who couldn’t stand up for themselves," she explained.

Pizarro's family said this does bring peace, but they also want something more.

“God is all-forgiving and he wants us to forgive," said his grandmother. "So, I forgive him (the teen suspect). I forgive him. I have forgiven him but I want him to get help.”

The 15-year-old will appear in juvenile court next week for a preliminary hearing.
