New video of shooting: Neighbors scared, frustrated at heated meeting after fatal shooting at 'problematic house'
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- People in a Milwaukee neighborhood are fed up after a deadly shooting.
An 18-year-old was killed Saturday morning, May 2, after a shooting at 1:05 am.
Neighbors say it's the latest in a long string of incidents at a problematic house.
They want the city and police department to do more to keep them safe.
On Sunday afternoon, May 3, they met with elected leaders and MPD brass who say they're committed to doing so.
CBS 58 secured surveillance videos that show the moment automatic gunfire shook the neighborhood awake near 62nd and Harrison.
One video from a nearby home shows a car park around the corner and two people get out. One is holding something in their arm.
They walk around through the alley.
Moments later they open fire at a house. The two people run back to the car and take off.
The shooting sparked widespread fear and anger throughout the neighborhood.
Alderman Peter Burgelis scheduled a community meeting Sunday afternoon to discuss concerns. Dozens of people showed up.
One told him, "It's just not getting safe, it's getting worse."
Another said, "We need Milwaukee to treat our community the way we treat our community."
And they did not hold back.
David Dunning has lived in the neighborhood since 1955. We asked Dunning if he felt like he was heard at the meeting. He told us, "I feel scared."
Neighbors want broken streetlights repaired and more police patrols.
MPD Capt. Timothy Leitzke told the group, "Bad things happen. This is an incident… We're not going to allow a trend to happen here."
Burgelis acknowledged their feelings, telling us after the meeting, "Neighbors are legitimately concerned. And shocked. And probably still in shock just a day later."
But Burgelis said his 11th district has one of the lowest crime rates in the entire city. And he said this shooting was targeted and not something people should fear.
But frustrated neighbors say they've reported issues in the past.
One said, "If it wasn't happening a bunch, we wouldn't be here together."
We also got surveillance video from a neighbor from 2023 that shows a drive-by shooting in broad daylight.
Still, Capt. Leitzke is confident people will be safe, saying, "Because it's a safe neighborhood, we know that we can address this and restore this neighborhood to safety."
Some people share some level of confidence, like Amelia Soneberg, who said, "To see this presence is pretty great. It’ll just mean more if there’s action that follows the presence."
But others do not.
We asked Dunning for his level of confidence. He said, "It's not there."
No arrests have been made in the shooting yet, but Capt. Leitzke said he's confident "this will get resolved."
He told us he has a very low concern there will be more violence in the neighborhood connected to this shooting.
