MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A major construction project is coming to Milwaukee's south side.
Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett announced more than $23 million in federal funding to help reconstruct National Avenue.
It's a more than two-mile stretch of road from 1st the 39th Streets.
The federal money comes in addition to around $1.4 million in local funds.
In a news conference Monday, Mayor Barrett emphasized the impact the project will have not only on residents but businesses as well.
"Transportation and economic development go hand in hand with this corridor being home to so many businesses," Mayor Barrett said. "This project will undoubtedly benefit them as well."
The project will take some time. The Department of Public Works (DPW) estimates it won't get underway until 2026.
In the meantime, officials will work on the design of the project and give residents a better understanding of what to expect.
