500+ local youth head to Baran Park for Milwaukee Brewers 10th annual Play Ball Weekend
CBS 58 MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- On Saturday, more than 500 kids from Southeast Wisconsin attended the Milwaukee Brewers' 10th annual Play Ball weekend -- a league-wide initiative by the MLB.
The free event was held at Baran Park in Milwaukee and even featured several Brewers alumni including Jim Gantner, Jerry Augustine, Bill Castro and Vinny Rottino.
Organizers said it's a chance to get kids outside and active all while learning a team sport.
"This event is a true collaboration united by a shared commitment to engaging young people to participate in baseball and softball," said Katina Shaw, the vice president of community relations for the team. "Baseball truly welcomes everyone."
Attendee Reggie Harris said events like Play Ball are key for the community.
"It's crucial because kids need to learn about teamwork, commitment, focus, and programs run by the Brewers and all the other partners is just fantastic," Harris said. "Not everybody's gonna become a Yelich or a Misiorowski, but they can learn some skills that can also later transfer to life."
Martin Weddle, the director of athletics and sports facilities for Journey House, said it's great to see Milwaukee's youth come out.
"My role and responsibility as director of athletics and sports facilities is pretty much to engage youth and families and get them actively engaged in physical activity and what better way to do that than at this Play Ball event?" Weddle said.
All attendees also received a bat and ball set to take home.
