25 bagged lunches, 25 reasons for hope: Right Relief provides meals to families undergoing medical treatment
WAUWATOSA, Wis. (CBS 58) -- If the holidays are about bringing loved ones together over a comforting meal, Holly Mealy makes it her mission to bring one to every family.
“I know what it’s like to be on the opposite side," said Mealy.
She founded Right Relief in 2019, a local nonprofit that provides care to caregivers.
“Both my dad and my sister have had cancer," said Mealy. “You just, you feel helpless. So, we want to take that away from caregivers.”
Mealy hopes that by providing a homecooked meal, she's taking one burden off the plate for families going through medical hardships.
“You know, sometimes eight, 10-hour days at the hospital. They’re tired and just not having to think about what’s for lunch or what’s for dinner at the end of the day, I know is a huge relief," said Mealy.
Families like Timothy Morgan's.
"I have cancer. In the throat, tonsils," said Morgan.
Morgan will spend the next seven weeks at Kathy's House, a home for people going through treatment.
"This place is heaven. I mean when you have to worry about cancer stuff and worry about the next few steps of your life, coming here makes it so much easier," said Morgan. "The food -- it tastes so good, too. I mean they take their time.”
Kim Lamansky, the CEO of Kathy's House, says Mealy's mission has provided over 10,000 meals to people at Kathy's House.
“It fills the heart and the souls and the bellies of numerous people every day," said Lamansky.
As Mealy prepares 25 bagged lunches filled with grab-and-go meals, it's also 25 reasons of hope for Morgan.
“The people in this house, that run this house, that work here – angels. I mean, I don’t know how to explain it," said Morgan.
“It’s okay to ask for or accept help," said Mealy.
