MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Three Milwaukee police officers were injured in a shooting that happened near 91st and Custer on Thursday, Sept. 5.

All three officers are recovering in the hospital and are expected to be ok.

The suspect was also injured and taken into custody.

Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman said in a news conference, around 10:15 a.m. officers were in the area seeking a 35-year-old man wanted for felony possession of a firearm, domestic-violence-related false imprisonment, and sexual assault.

Police have not named the man yet.

Officers tried to communicate with the suspect for more than an hour to get him to surrender, but he did not.

When he shot at officers, they shot back, and several people were almost caught in the crossfire.

We obtained cell phone video from witnesses inside the apartment building during the exchange.

One clip shows officers yelling to the man in the apartment unit, "Come out now with your hands up and surrender."

Later they yelled, "We got a shield! We got a shield!"

Those witnesses dove for cover as the gunshots rang out.

One man yelled out, "Hey! You got to be careful! Kids are here!"

A crying woman was holding a child. She yelled, "The bullets got to come in through the wall!"

The man said to her, "Check your baby. Your baby's fine? You ok? You're good, you're good."

Three officers sustained non-fatal injuries in the shooting: a 43-eary-old man with over 19 years of service, a 49-year-old man with over 19 years of service, and a 44-year-old male with over 21 years of service.

Four officers fired their weapons during the incident. All of them will be placed on administrative leave per police protocol.

After the gunfire ended, officers continued to communicate with the suspect.

The suspect then surrendered, giving up two handguns with extended magazines. He was taken to Froedtert Hospital for treatment of non-fatal injuries.

Michael Perez works a few doors down from the apartment building and recorded the scene outside.

He told us, "All of a sudden we just hear glass breaking. And we looked and it was cops trying to get in through a window."

Perez said, "As they were breaking, that's when I heard five or six shots."

Perez said the man was taken out on a stretcher. Police could not say for sure that he was shot.

At the news conference, Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman said, "This is unacceptable and it should be a problem for our community."

Norman said the Special Investigations Division executes warrants and is trained for potentially combative situations. "They are individuals who really are at the tip of the spear of our different proactive work in our city."

"As we can see, the behavior that was responded with this particular, almost de-escalation-type of style where they're very well trained in regard to this type of work, was responded with shots fired. That is unacceptable," said Chief Norman.

No bystanders came forward with injuries, but other people were impacted.

Mayor Cavalier Johnson said, "This was an attack on the entire city of Milwaukee. This is an attack on everybody in this community."

Since the suspect had a felony gun possession charge on his record, he would be barred from possessing the guns used to shoot the officers.

Mayor Johnson again implored state lawmakers to toughen the state's gun laws. "We need to do something. And nothing has been done. Nothing's been done in Wisconsin, nothing's been done in some of these other states."

The three officers that were injured each have more than 19 years' experience on the force.

Two of them were among the four that shot at the suspect.

Body camera video of this incident will be released within 15 days, per department policy.
