$4.25M multistate settlement reached with Menards over 'deceptive' advertising, price gouging
iStock.com/Wolterk MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Attorney General Josh Kaul, along with the state Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection announced a $4.25 million multistate settlement Wednesday, with Menards.
It comes in response to claims that the company marketed the Menards 11% rebate program deceptively and engaged in price gouging during the Covid-19 pandemic, according to the Department of Justice (DOJ).
The DOJ says 10 states were involved in the settlement; Wisconsin's portion is over $750,000.
“Figuring out how much you’ll have to pay to buy something should be straightforward,” said AG Kaul. “It shouldn’t be an adventure.”
“This settlement reinforces a message in Wisconsin law: practices like deceptive marketing or price gouging during a declared period of abnormal economic disruption are unfair to consumers,” said Randy Romanski, Secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection, which contributed to the investigation.
The DOJ says the terms of the settlement also include several practices Menards must incorporate in their advertising and sales.
