MILWAUKEE, Wis. (CBS 58) – After a deadly hit-and-run killed a Milwaukee 90-year-old man in the Silver City neighborhood, family members tell CBS 58 the man was a grandfather and father who died after leaving a Mother’s Day party on Saturday, May 10.

Leo Deleon identified his grandfather, Roberto Deleon, as the 90-year-old. Police say a 41-year-old man in a vehicle hit Deleon near 35th and National at 9:40 p.m. before he drove away from the scene.

Police later identified and arrested the 41-year-old.

Neighbors who live in the area say it’s a common location for high-speed chases and crashes.

“I don’t feel it’s very safe anymore for our kids,” said Guadelupe Hernanez, who lives near 35th and National. “This neighborhood is not safe anymore, for no one. To cross the street, you probably have to look more than twice because we have a lot of hit-and-runs here. So, you have to be very careful.”

Hernanez said it’s heartbreaking this deadly hit-and-run happened after a Mother’s Day celebration.

“The Spanish community, we celebrate Mother’s Day on the 10th, which was yesterday, that’s really sad that happened yesterday,” Hernandez said.

Deleon had 6 kids and over 20 grandchildren. Deleon’s grandson said he had previously worked at Mi Casita Bar Club.

Charges for the 41-year-old man are being referred to the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office in the coming days.
