A Mexican dish is making a reputation for itself in Milwaukee: Torta Ahogada
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- During Hispanic Heritage Month, we celebrate their culture, music and, of course, food! One such food item that has increased in popularity in the area is a Mexican dish: Torta Ahogada, also known as a drowned sandwich.
A young Mexican from Milwaukee has dedicated himself to bringing the Torta Ahogada dish to Milwaukee.
Azael Flores Guerrero was inspired to bring this delicious dish through the trips he took with his family to Mexico every year. He also wanted to bring a not-so-typical dish to the United States.
One year ago, he opened his business, Aza's Tortas Ahogadas, and it has been a great success.
Guerrero says he has experienced a great deal of satisfaction from the dish's popularity in Milwaukee, saying, "It makes me happy to have a dish that is something different and not common." He added, "Bringing this dish to Milwaukee is something that I have loved very much."
The dish has its origin in Guadalajara. It costs of a savory bread roll stuffed with carnitas, beans, onions, lime and is topped with a tomato and chile sauce.
