Affordability tops voter concerns as Crowley, Tiffany make final push
CBS 58 WISCONSIN (CBS 58) — Amid the Brewers celebration, the candidates for governor are hoping for a big win of their own.
The latest Marquette Law School Poll shows Crowley leading overall, while Tiffany holds an edge on cutting taxes. On Thursday, a crowd of supporters in Beloit heard from several Democratic candidates about how their policies will make life more affordable. According to that same poll, affordability remains the No. 1 issue for voters.
When we think about affordability, we notice everyday items are costing us more, like gas, groceries and electric bills. David Crowley says he’s focused on bringing those prices down.
“I am making sure that we’re focusing on affordability, focusing on our public schools, expanding health care and child care, and in the next five days, we are going to continue to pound that pavement,” Crowley said.
Taxes are also a concern for voters. In the latest Marquette poll, respondents were asked whether they thought Tiffany or Crowley would do more to reduce taxes in Wisconsin. Forty-two percent believe Tom Tiffany would, while only 17% believe David Crowley would.
Crowley says his opponent’s solutions to taxes are short-term fixes.
“I am focused on bringing a solution to all Wisconsinites to make sure we have long-term sustainability when it comes down to how we fund local municipalities, our schools and the state of Wisconsin,” Crowley said.
Tiffany disagrees. He says that, as county executive, Crowley raised taxes and points to Crowley’s support for the idea of tolling during the debate. He sent the following statement in response to our inquiry related to the poll.
“David Crowley has repeatedly defended his record of raising taxes every year on Milwaukee County residents and is now looking for more ways to make families pay through toll roads and higher fees. My plan is to end the 400-year property tax hike, cut income taxes by 10% for working families, and put more money back in your pocket. Wisconsinites deserve a governor who will lower taxes, not raise them. That’s the message we’re taking to voters, and it’s how we’ll win on November 3rd,” said Tom Tiffany.
Both candidates are continuing their bus tours across the state ahead of Election Day on Nov. 3.
