MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) - Following a deadly shooting by a federal officer in Minneapolis, anger over the killing of 37-year-old Alex Pretti is spreading far beyond Minnesota.

On Saturday afternoon, Jan. 24, that anger turned into action as dozens of protesters gathered in downtown Milwaukee, calling for ICE to be abolished and demanding accountability.

“We have an unlawful, unconstitutional, rogue agency sent to communities to terrorize them,” said Francesca Hong, a Democratic state representative from Madison. “I have multiple calls from folks in Minneapolis devastated, bawling.”

At Red Arrow Park, chants filled the chilly air as more than a hundred people rallied, determined to make their voices heard. Holding signs and speaking out against the agency, protesters refused to stay quiet in the wake of what they called a brutal killing by federal agents.

“This is now the second time that we’re seeing a video of someone brutally killed in Minneapolis. We’re seeing that there aren’t any acknowledgments or accountability from this administration,” said Fernanda Jimenez, one of the protesters. “As we're seeing people are fighting back and showing their anger and frustration, that is what Milwaukee showed today.”

The crowd grew as the protest spread, with marchers filling the streets on their way to the Milwaukee U.S. Department of Homeland Security office. Many protesters feared that what happened in Minneapolis could happen in their own community.

“Minneapolis is our neighbor and we never know if Milwaukee might get targeted. If it ever is targeted, the people are ready to fight back,” Jimenez added.

Despite the cold temperatures protesters made it clear that they would continue to take action.

“I know people are scared, I’m scared too. We have to harness that fear for collective freedom and organize and make sure love wins,” Hong said.

The rally in Milwaukee was just one of many demonstrations sparked by the recent shooting. With growing support for the movement, activists are determined to keep showing up - fighting for justice and demanding change.
