Apartment fire in Racine displaces residents, leaves pet dead

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- An apartment fire in Racine displaced multiple residents and caused the death of one pet, according to the Racine Fire Department.
Fire crews responded Wednesday, March 5 at around 10:54 p.m. to a reported fire near the intersection of Mt. Pleasant and Melvin. Responders arrived within three minutes and found light smoke on the building’s second floor.
The fire is believed to have originated in a kitchen.
One apartment sustained heavy fire and smoke damage, while another had moderate water damage. Residents of those two apartments were displaced; remaining occupants were able to return home within two hours.
No residents or firefighters were injured during the incident, but fire crews discovered one pet dead inside the building.
Officials estimate structural damage at $55,000 and losses to apartment contents at $12,000. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but authorities do not suspect criminal activity to be involved.
