WISCONSIN (CBS 58) -- State leaders came together virtually Thursday, April 1, to discuss gun safety measures in Wisconsin.
Attorney General Josh Kaul joined two senators in support of universal background checks on all gun sales.
Kaul says Wisconsin's current laws allow some people making smaller gun purchases to avoid the background checks.
He says then those who aren't authorized to have a gun can try to get one.
"The legislation that was proposed in the last session, that's included in the governor's budget, would close those loopholes and make sure that everybody who's getting a firearm has to go through the same background check process," Kaul said.
Wisconsin Republicans are opposed to Governor Evers' gun universal background checks.
Many Republican leaders call it an attack on the Second Amendment.
