CBS 58 MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukeeans are still recovering the storms that caused widespread flooding last August. As many residents wait for their FEMA check and insurance money, one basement repair company says you should get a head start on having your basement assessed.
"Depending on what the scope of the repair is, it can be anywhere from 4 weeks out to 10 weeks," said Christopher Mancuso, the owner of Accurate Basement Repair.
After flooding, it's important to replace drywall and rip up carpet, but Mancuso says it's also important to look beyond those things to assure you don't get any more water in the future.
"What I'd be looking for is staining along the bottom of the walls. When we see staining that's continuous along a section of the wall here, that's going to tell me there's probably a drain tile problem," said David Nason, the president of the Wisconsin Association of Home Inspectors. "If we see staining up high on the walls or on the corners, that's usually going to be a grading or a downspout problem."
While many homes won't need these extra repairs, Nason says getting issues checked out before an expensive remodel can save you money in the long run.
