NOW: BBB shares online safety tips for families and schools this fall

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- As students head back to school, the Wisconsin Better Business Bureau is reminding families to take steps to protect children’s privacy and safety online.

Lisa Schiller, senior director of investigations and media relations at the BBB, joined us on Monday, Sept. 8, to share tools and tips aimed at both parents and educators.

Parents are encouraged to monitor app downloads, talk with children about location tracking and avoid entering personal details into contests or giveaways. Schiller also recommends reviewing privacy policies together and using parental controls where appropriate.

Educators are advised to update cybersecurity plans, secure videoconferencing platforms and keep classroom devices current with the latest software.

Families can explore resources from organizations like the Children’s Advertising Review Unit, the Family Online Safety Institute and the Federal Trade Commission’s COPPA guidance to better understand the laws and protections in place for kids online.
