Beer garden expected to open in Milwaukee's Red Arrow Park this July

CBS 58

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A vacant space in downtown Milwaukee could soon welcome a beer garden as its latest tenant.

But it's a temporary plan, and the county is looking at ways to attract a business there permanently.

The sign on the door was the first indication something is coming to Red Arrow Park. Empty since March, a new beer garden will fill the space starting in July.

Milwaukee County Parks Executive Director Guy Smith told us, "I think this is, really, a great opportunity to activate the space."

Milwaukee County got several unsolicited proposals for the empty space at Red Arrow Park.

A sign on the door says they're working to finalize a vendor permit with the team that operates the Estabrook Park beer garden.

They hope to have it up and running in July.

Smith said, "Really happy that Hans has stepped up in the short term because you know our downtown parts are vibrant. We want to be able to provide some great amenities for people."

Hans Weissgerber is the brains behind the operation at Estabrook Park beer garden and the Old German Beer Hall.

We spoke with Weissgerber briefly on the phone Friday; he referred questions to the county for now.

Smith said the collaboration will create another space for people to gather and enjoy Milwaukee County parks.

That includes in winter months, too. The temporary agreement would run through March 2027.

"We have the ice rink at Red Arrow," Smith said. "So, it’s always great to have a vendor there during the winter months."

The Red Arrow Park site is just a few blocks south of Juneau where food trucks park.

That area has caused some city officials concern as late night crime has spiked outside the Water Street bars.

Last call for the beer garden would be 9 pm. And Smith is not concerned about safety.

We asked Alderman Bob Bauman if he had any concerns. He replied, "Given the proposed operator's track record, I do not."

Getting the beer garden up and running will be a short-term win, but the county is also looking to attract a long-term tenant.

Starting next month, the county will issue a request for proposals for the concession space.

The Biggby Coffee was preceded by a Starbucks at that location.

Smith said, "We can reimagine what is in that space. It doesn't always have to be a coffee shop, per se. So, we felt this was a great opportunity."

There are no restrictions on what could go in there next.

"We’re open to any options that are family friendly and open to the community," Smith said.

This agreement runs through March, but the county is not opposed to a permanent beer garden and welcomes those proposals, too.

All the information will be posted in the next week or so on the county's website.
