Boyfriend charged with homicide in death of mother, MPS teacher

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Charges have been filed against the man accused of fatally shooting 51-year-old Latonia Ford on the morning of July 6.

Kenny Knight is charged with first degree intentional homicide and possession of a firearm by a felon.

According to a criminal complaint, officers responded to the area of 58th and Hampton around 8:49 a.m. for a reported shooting. Police found Ford in the driver's seat of a vehicle, with numerous gunshot wounds. First responders arrived on scene and pronounced the victim deceased just before 9 a.m.

Around 9:24 a.m., prosecutors say Knight walked into Milwaukee Police District 4 and stated, "Morning boss. I am here to turn myself in, I just shot my girlfriend."

The complaint says officers recovered video footage from the area that shows Knight pull up in a car behind Ford's vehicle before he exits the car and approaches her. It says Ford begins to drive away and Knight follows alongside the vehicle briefly, then gets back inside his car and drives westbound.

Detectives recovered dozens of spent casings and broken glass in the area near Ford's car. An autopsy revealed she was shot at least 22 times.

Prosecutors say when detectives interviewed Knight, he told them he had dated Latonia Ford for about eight years, and they had been living together until a few days prior to the shooting.

The complaint says Knight wrote down the following note for detectives:

“I, Kenny Knight, drove by Latonia Fords home around 8:30 am and noticed that her vehicle wasn’t there. I then began drinking liquor and decided to go by her friend’s house. I noticed Latonia sitting in her car talking on the phone to --- telling her about the night before. I walked up to her car on the passenger side and first banged on the window and when the window didn’t break I began shooting at her until the gun was empty.”

Records show Knight was convicted of substantial battery in Milwaukee County in 2002.

Cash bond has been set at $300,000. A preliminary hearing is set for July 18.
