'Camaraderie and friendship': Hundreds participate in local Bike4Friendship event
CBS 58 MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Hundreds of walkers and bikers came together to celebrate friendship, while supporting a good cause on Sunday.
"Camaraderie and friendship and you know community," said Kate Mansalis, who participated in the Walk or Bike4Friendship event.
Those are the words Mansalis, who's a Mom of four, uses to describe her experience with The Friendship Circle of Wisconsin, a group her family relies heavily on.
“I think that Friendship Circle is great and supporting families with special needs, children, not only their special needs you know family members, but also the whole family," said Mansalis.
Kate's 13-year-old son Connor was among the hundreds of people crossing the finish line for The Friendship Circle of Wisconsin's annual Walk or Bike4Friendship event.
"Friendship Circle gives them a way to see that Connor also has a community outside of the home, which is super cool," said Mansalis. "So, activities that he does, they have like a softball league and other things that you know kiddos with special needs who couldn’t participate in typical sports and activities can do."
Friendship Circle of Wisconsin is a non-profit that provides opportunities, activities and support to people living with disabilities and mental health challenges.
Sunday's fundraising event helps the group raise the funds to keep supporting their community.
"We have people from all over the community, all backgrounds, all abilities coming together, showing unity, stepping up for friendship and saying that in our community everyone belongs, everyone’s included," said Leah Stein, the Chief Operating Officer, with The Friendship Circle of Wisconsin.
People walked or biked anywhere from one mile to one hundred.
"We have some participants who never thought they could ride a bike and they’re out there right now riding their bikes and if you want to do it, you can do it right," said Stein. "When there’s friendship, there’s a way."
All leaving with the reminder that they are capable of anything they set their mind to.
The event surpassed their goal of raising $180,000 and all of the funds will go back towards the non-profit to help them continue their mission.
