CBS 58's Hometown Athlete: Wisconsin native Jordan Meulemans returns home just in time
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Marquette Golden Eagles women's basketball team added some Wisconsin flavor to this year's roster.
Coming out of high school, De Pere native Jordan Meulemans received an offer from Marquette, but the timing wasn't right. Now it's all come full circle.
"Going into that portal, I really wanted Marquette to contact me and they did. So, I feel like it was meant to be," said Meulemans.
Meulemans sat out last season with Butler after tearing her ACL in late October of 2024. Now fully healthy, the Wisconsin native can put on the jersey for the team she grew up rooting for.
"It’s surreal," said Meulemans. "My parents couldn't really come watch a lot of games at Butler because most of them are on weekdays, they could come to this game when we played which was cool. Now they get to come to all the home games and some away games which is amazing."
While at Butler, Meulemans had a up close look at Cara Consuegra’s version of Marquette. In two seasons in Indianapolis, Meulemans shot 38.3% from three-point range, including 42.1% as a sophomore. Now she brings those skills to the blue and gold.
"She fit exactly what we need out of the portal. She's a big guard who can shoot and defend. Has championship experience, has Big East experience. So again, I'm not sure we could have gotten a better player out of the portal, said Consuegra. "She knows the game. She's played at a high level being in the big east. For her it's just small adjustments. Learning our scheme, learning what I want. But she's a really fast learner."
"I'm grateful Coach Cara gave me the opportunity and believed in me. I just wanted a winning culture and if you look up, Marquette - the postseason almost every year. And that is something I want to do; I want to go to the NCAA tournament. That's one of the biggest things for me," said Meulemans.
She has already earned the nickname JoJo from her teammates and the junior guard plans to have plenty of fun taking the court with them all season long.
"I want my teammates to do just as well as me if not more - better than me," said Meulemans. "I love celebrating. If you see me on the court, I love hyping people up, celebrating."
After Marquette's first road trip of the season at Minnesota on Tuesday, Nov. 11, the Golden Eagles are back home to take on Bowling Green Friday night, Nov. 14.
