Charles Antetokounmpo Family Foundation, GE HealthCare announce initiative to improve health in Milwaukee
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A commitment to improve health in Milwaukee is getting a little boost from a hometown superstar.
The Charles Antetokounmpo Family Foundation and GE HealthCare are partnering to "power Milwaukee forward."
The goal here is to improve health outcomes in the city of Milwaukee, recognizing that a strong community means investing in the health of its residents.
GE HealthCare and its foundation are teaming up with Milwaukee Bucks power forward Giannis Antetokounmpo and his family foundation. They're investing $1 million in this initiative. Here's how it'll work.
Ten Milwaukee nonprofits will receive grants. The $1 million will be split between them, so that's $100,000 for each organization.
Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson and County Executive David Crowley say they're excited for the impact of this investment.
Giannis and his family, including wife Mariah, were there for the big announcement, and say they're excited to give back to a community that continues to show their family so much love.
"I grew up in this community," Giannis Antetokounmpo said. "I've had my kids in this community, I thrive in this community, and I call this community home. And I want to make a difference in this community moving forward."
"I think health is everything, and there's so many factors that really affects health, not just one thing," said Abigal Epane-Osuala, VP of the GE HealthCare Foundation.
Here's a look at the 10 organizations receiving grants through Power Milwaukee Forward.
Officials say each of them address social determinants of health in the community, which is why they were chosen.
This includes housing, education, food, safe physical environments, and maternal and infant health care.
