City of Milwaukee welcomes dads for its annual Fatherhood Summit
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee held its annual Fatherhood Summit Saturday, Nov. 16th. The event was held at the Milwaukee Academy of Science and welcomes crowds of dads to get valuable resources.
"The major focus of this summit is making sure that fathers are in the best position possible to be the stabilizing forces in their families," said Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson.
Mayor Johnson and Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley gave remarks to kick things off and CBS 58's Frankie Jupiter served as program emcee.
The one-day event provides access to helpful resources, services, workshops, and fellowship. This year's keynote speaker was Pastor Kenneth Lock with Evolve Church.
Some of the sessions offered included skills for co-parenting, accountability for domestic violence, understanding mental wellness, and legal education to better help some dads navigate the criminal justice system.
"A lot of fathers want to take care of their family and with a felony record it hinders you from attaining certain jobs and careers' of fathers want to take care of their family and with a felony record it hinders you from attaining certain jobs and careers," said Doyle Sprewer.
Today, fathers who need it will learn how to get applying for pardons and expungement.
The Fatherhood Summit continues to help dads in the community and now Milwaukee also has a sister event for moms, created after First Lady Dominique Johnson learned there was not a program for moms like this.
