MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Community organizers are hoping to reduce the level of violence in Milwaukee. The annual 'Heal the Hood' resource fair returned to promote a more peaceful city.
The event kicked off at noon, with city and county safety organizations handing out information about summer youth programs and resources.
For more than 10 years, the 'Heal the Hood' has been hosted every Memorial Day weekend as an unofficial kick off to summer.
Organizers tell us it's a great way to get people connected with each other.
"It's an opportunity to connect residents with resources as well as local entrepreneurs to also sell their wares and expand their customer base and just all about promoting peace. We just wanna have a peaceful, a good start to a peaceful weekend that is usually violent. And so, today's a good day to do that," said Jessica Butler, event coordinator.
Butler says the yearly event wouldn't be possible without the community coming out to support their mission, and more than 40 volunteers who helped this year.
