SHOREWOOD, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A Shorewood police officer and two others were shot in the neighborhood of Olive and Bartlett in the early morning hours Thursday, July 3. The medical examiner's office confirmed Thursday afternoon that one of those victims died.
She was identified as 34-year-old Victoria Truss.
Residents in the area were sent mobile phone alerts to shelter in place Thursday morning due to an "ongoing tactical situation."
"At least two rounds struck the windshield and another round into the passenger side of the vehicle," Shorewood Police Chief Heather Wurth said. "Our officer took a round into the vest. We were incredibly fortunate that the vest did its job."
Chief Wurth says the Shorewood Police Department and assisting agencies are investigating the incident, which occurred around 2:51 a.m.
The officer who was shot was taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure only.
During a morning press conference, Chief Wurth said police were responding to a call for a shooting when they were shot at. She said police did not discharge their firearms, despite one officer being shot.
They say this was an isolated incident and not a random attack.
Just after 9 a.m., police saw the suspect vehicle and a chase ensued. The driver sped through the streets despite flat tires and continued to shoot at responding officers as he drove. The chase ended in a Milwaukee neighborhood when police crashed the car and stopped it.
But the suspect did not surrender. Police shot back, and the suspect was killed.
The neighborhood was locked down for nearly eight hours of the investigation.
Chief Wurth got emotional talking about the attacks and recent violence on police officers.
"I just want to state how incredibly challenging a situation like this is," she said. "Given the circumstances that Milwaukee is facing. And the risks that our officers are facing doing their job every single day. The inherent risks that they face and the attacks that they're under. The violence in this community, Milwaukee, Shorewood, and the attacks against our officers has got to stop."
