Complaint: Child fatally struck by car climbed out of open apartment window; driver charged for operating without a license
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A Milwaukee man has been charged after police say he struck and killed a 2-year-old child who wandered into the street Wednesday Nov. 13, near 60th and Hustis.
According to a criminal complaint, 2-year-old Angelo Berry climbed out of an open apartment window and wandered into the road unsupervised.
He was struck by a truck driven by 41-year-old Laron Lawrence, who told police he attempted to swerve out of the way but still hit the child. The boy was taken to an area hospital where he died of his injuries.
The complaint says a witness told police they saw the truck traveling southbound on 60th Street when the child suddenly appeared in the roadway. They said the truck braked and swerved but appeared unable to avoid striking the boy. Officials say Lawrence stopped after the accident and remained on scene.
DOT records show Lawrence had a learner's permit in 2014 which expired in 2015, and he never followed through to get a license.
He's charged with operating a vehicle without a valid license, causing death.
A 25-year-old man has also been arrested for child neglect.
