Prosecutors say 22-year-old Makenzie Critton admitted to smothering her baby the morning of July 27, and to suffocating the child twice previously in attempts to quiet her cries.

According to the criminal complaint, Critton called 911 the morning of July 27 and said, "My 7-month-old is not moving," and "not responding to anything."

Officers responded to the home near 25th and Hadley and found the infant unresponsive. After lifesaving efforts, the baby was taken to Children's Wisconsin where she was later pronounced deceased.

The complaint says Critton told police she woke up that morning, gave the child a bottle, changed her diaper, and put her in a car seat to sleep. Critton reportedly told investigators she went back to sleep, and when she woke up, the child was not breathing. 

Prosecutors say officers spoke with a family member who reported a previous incident of witnessed abuse by Critton. The family member said on June 12, they caught Critton smothering the child, placing her hand over the baby's nose and mouth and keeping her from breathing. The family member said they immediately took the baby away from Critton and kept her from Critton the rest of the day. Critton reportedly said she covered the child's nose and mouth because she wouldn't stop crying. 

Officers present on the morning of July 27 reported Critton "showed no emotion" as first responders tried to resuscitate her child and "remained emotionless" on the ambulance ride to Children's Wisconsin. 

When questioned by police, the complaint says Critton said, "I got frustrated," and admitted to intentionally pressing the infant's face into her chest for 10-15 minutes until she stopped breathing and appeared blue.

Critton allegedly admitted to smothering the baby twice before, according to the complaint, and claimed the child would "always come back." Prosecutors say Critton admitted to suffocating the baby in June, as relayed by the family member, as well as a week or two earlier when the baby's father walked into the room, stopped Critton, and "told her that she could not suffocate [the child] anymore." 

When detectives informed Critton that the 7-month-old had died, the complaint says Critton cried and said, "I am going to jail for a long time."

A final ruling on cause and manner of death is pending. 

Critton is charged with physical abuse of a child, repeated acts causing death. 

Records show Critton is due in court for an initial appearance Friday, July 31.
