MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Just a day after reopening a fire station on Milwaukee's south side, the crew for Engine 31 put out a house fire just a block away.
"This is obviously beneficial for the community that we were able to get here so quickly, minimize and confine the damage," said Deputy Chief Ron Firnrohr.
The fire was reported around 9 a.m. Thursday morning and callers said the house on fire was just around the corner from the newly reopened firehouse.
This was the exact reason officials put Station 31 back to work, to get to homes in this neighborhood as quickly as possible.
"If this company was not in service, other fire companies would have had to come from farther away, increasing the response time, letting the fire grow and make conditions worse if anyone was inside."
Luckily, this home had working smoke alarms, so everyone inside was able to get out on their own safely.
If you need a smoke detector, the Milwaukee Fire Department can install one for free. You can call the Smoke Detector Hotline at 414-286-8980.
