Crowley presents 2027 Milwaukee County budget, proposes end to Flock camera funding

CBS 58

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley presented his 2027 recommended budget to the County Board on Thursday, Oct. 1, saying it closes a projected $50 million gap while preserving county services.

Crowley said the county's tax rate has decreased every year he's been in office, and that under this proposed budget, the county portion of property taxes on a $250,000 home would drop by $30 in 2027.

The budget proposal does not include funding to renew the county's Flock camera contract, which expires in December. Crowley said concerns about residents' privacy outweighed the technology's benefits and said he is redirecting that money toward Eviction Free MKE, a program that helps residents who are facing eviction.

Other items in the proposal include a one-time $12.1 million draw from the county's debt service reserve to maintain Milwaukee County Transit System service through 2027, $15.8 million in capital funding for the Courthouse Complex project, $5 million toward rehabilitating the Mitchell Park Domes, $5.2 million for improvements at 10 playgrounds and a 2% raise for county employees.

Crowley is also proposing a paid parking pilot program at high-demand park locations, such as the lakefront, which he said is projected to bring in about $670,000 for the parks system. Without it, Crowley said the county could face closing a pool and 15 splash pads.

The County Board will now be considering the budget.
