Despite heat, drivers gear up for Slinger Nationals

CBS 58

SLINGER, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A lot of us have jobs that keep us away from the heat and in nice, air-conditioned offices or stores. But there are also a lot of people who aren't so lucky.

A practice and a mock qualifying run was held at Slinger Speedway for Slinger Nationals on Monday, July 13 -- the track's biggest event of the season.

Imagine working around hot cars and then driving them in fireproof suits. CBS 58 spoke with veteran driver Rich Bickle, who told us about a race in 1989 in Alabama, when they monitored the temperature inside his car.

"I had a thermometer at my feet...and rear window. A 200-mile race, I lost 11 pounds. It was 162 degrees at my feet, 157 [degrees] at window. And it was 105 degrees out so tomorrow it's supposed to be 95," said Bickle.

The track opens Tuesday at noon for the Slinger Nationals. Bickle says he knows it'll be hot for the fans, but as he puts it, if you don't come watch it, you're gonna miss a really good show.
