DELAVAN, Wis. (CBS 58) -- After spending nearly six years in a local animal shelter, one lucky pup has finally found his forever family.
We first brought you Romeo's story back in December of 2021. He was one of several dogs at Lakeland Animal Shelter in Delavan who "wrote letters" to Santa with their Christmas wishes.
Romeo had called the shelter home since 2016. Part of his Christmas letter read:
"My Christmas wish remains the same, A true and forever family of my very own. I want it to be my last home and family, so I am willing to wait no matter how long it takes, but I secretly hope that it is not too much longer! I am almost eight years old but please don't consider me what they call 'a senior,' no way!"
Now, Romeo's wish has come true.
Lakeland Animal Shelter says a week ago, his new parents started coming in to spend time with him. They fell in love and wanted to have a sleepover with him. Then, they decided to finalize the adoption.
Staff says when they returned to the shelter, you could tell Romeo had already bonded with his new family. They say he was excited to see his shelter friends, but kept checking back in with his new parents.
Congratulations, Romeo!
