MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Dr. Howard Fuller has spent his life fighting for the rights of Black people and for the education of young people.
He was MPS superintendent years ago, and now, at age 81, he's still as passionate about those causes as ever.
"We live in a city where right now, we could have Black students sit down at a lunch counter and cannot read the menu," Dr. Fuller said. "This is a crime against humanity."
Howard Fuller spoke at the groundbreaking for a new high school, the Dr. Howard Fuller Collegiate Academy.
The charter school already exists, but the new building in the Bronzeville neighborhood is part of an expansion project.
Dr. Fuller is unhappy with the current state of education, and he wants the new school to be a "beacon."
"It has to mean something to us that go beyond just the school. Because as Black people in this city, we have got to be better, as a community and as a people. And we have to show our young people that we are capable of doing better than what we're doing for them and for us," Dr. Fuller said.
The current Fuller Academy will be converted into a Feeder Middle School.
