Driver charged in Milwaukee police chase that ended in cellphone store crash

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A Milwaukee man is facing seven charges after a police pursuit ended in a crash at 35th and Vliet on Monday, Aug. 25.

According to a criminal complaint filed Wednesday, Aug. 27, 19-year-old Daveon Starks was driving a stolen Honda Accord without plates when officers attempted a traffic stop near 35th and National. Police said Starks sped into oncoming traffic, leading a 2.5-mile chase before colliding with another vehicle occupied by a pregnant woman and a 4-year-old boy.

The impact forced the Accord into a Total Wireless store, causing extensive damage.

Starks allegedly fled on foot before being arrested. Officers recovered cocaine, a digital scale, cash and two cellphones from the car.

Charges include fleeing an officer, two counts of second-degree recklessly endangering safety, possession with intent to deliver cocaine, two counts of felony bail jumping and obstructing an officer.

Prosecutors said Starks was already out on bail in two felony drug and fleeing cases.

A cash bond was set for $50,000 during his initial appearance on Friday, Aug. 29. His preliminary hearing is set for Monday, Sept. 8.
