Eric Toney announces candidacy for Wisconsin attorney general
CBS 58 WAUKESHA, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Fond du Lac County District Attorney Eric Toney has announced Tuesday he's taking another run at becoming Wisconsin's attorney general.
Toney will seek the Republican nomination in the 2026 general election.
"My commitment as your attorney general is simple, I will serve all of Wisconsin. I will enforce the rule of law without fear, without favor. Regardless of what party is in power that is what Wisconsin deserves as your attorney general that's what Wisconsin needs," Toney said.
Toney spoke while surrounded by Waukesha County District Attorney Lesli Boese and a small group of local law enforcement leaders, including Ozaukee County Sheriff Christy Knowles and Washington County Sheriff Martin Schulteis.
Toney did not take questions from reporters during or after the event.
During an announcement in Waukesha Tuesday morning, Toney mentioned his time as president of the Wisconsin District Attorney's Association. Toney cited efforts to secure pay raises for prosecutors and public defenders as well as add crime lab positions and 50 new prosecutor positions.
Democratic Gov. Tony Evers and the Republican-held Legislature agreed to the increased funding as part of a broad bipartisan agreement for the 2025-27 state budget.
Toney is seeking a rematch with Democratic Attorney General Josh Kaul, who defeated Toney by 35,000 votes in 2022.
Kaul announced his campaign for reelection earlier this month.
