MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Gov. Tony Evers has approved a $31.2 million resurfacing and improvement project along I-41/94/43/894 through the Mitchell Interchange in Milwaukee County. Work is set to begin Monday, Sept. 8.
According to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, the project covers about 6.5 miles of freeway. The limits are Rawson Avenue to the south, Howard Avenue to the north, and 35th Street to the west.
Crews will mill, patch and resurface pavement, add high friction surface treatments, perform bridge approach maintenance, improve retaining walls and drainage, and upgrade the College Avenue park-and-ride lots.
New signing and pavement marking will also be installed.
The project will be completed in stages, mainly during overnight or off-peak hours. Traffic impacts will include lane and ramp closures, though the current number of lanes and lane configurations will remain in place. Detours will be posted during closures, and access to businesses and residences will be maintained.
Work will pause during the winter months, resume in spring 2026, and is scheduled for completion by fall 2026, weather permitting.
