MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Legal experts around the United States are weighing in on how a presidential indictment plays out in the courts.

Unlike typical indictments, this one could have an impact on the country's next presidential election.

In a state that's nearly half red, half blue, with a handful of undecided voters, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Professor Emeritus Mordecai Lee said Wisconsin's response to the indictment of former President Donald Trump is practically predictable.

Lee predicts republicans who voted for Trump will support him through this legal battle.

"They'll sort of shrug it off and maybe even see it as some sort of conspiracy to take him down," Lee said.

Lee said the democrats who didn't will stick to their original intuition.

"I think what they'll be saying is 'I was right. I was right not to vote for him and therefore, I think he deserves this,'" Lee said.

As for the small percentage of people who lean either way in Wisconsin, Lee said they'll maybe find clarity in the situation.

"Those 50,000 people will really decide based on their reaction today if this will tilt them either for Trump or against Trump, either for the indictment or against the indictment," Lee said.

The indictment doesn't impede Trump's eligibility to run for the 2024 presidential election.

Lee said how Trump handles himself through the indictment may impact whether Wisconsin turns blue or red next year.
