MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A prominent black doctor and his family are grieving after the death of his son. The son of Dr. William Finlayson, 65-year-old Jahmés Tony Finlayson, died Monday after he was shot last month. He was a beloved musician, teacher and activist.

"Tony was a person who fed folks spirit and I think that's one of the reasons he has such love coming back," said Reggie Finlayson, brother.

Finlayson is the youngest son of Dr. William Finlayson, a well-known OBGYN and trailblazer in Milwaukee.

Reggie describes his brother as someone who lit up any room he walked into, leaving a lasting impact anywhere he went.

On Monday, Finlayson lost the battle for his life after he was shot in the early morning hours of June 27 near 1st and Burleigh. The family believe it was an attempted car theft. Police are still looking for the unknown suspect(s).

Friend Teresa Melbye of Life Center Milwaukee said Finlayson's loss has been felt deeply by his students. Finlayson was involved with the organization's Summer Enrichment program.

"We could not have asked for anyone more compassionate than Mr. Jahmés. Such a wonderful individual, such a loving soul who gave it his all," said Melbye.

Finlayson's family said as they wait for justice to be served, they'll continue to focus on the positive influence left behind by Finlayson.

A funeral is planned for July 22.
