MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The family of Corey Ruiz spoke in Madison Friday, July 24, with civil rights attorney Ben Crump. 

It marks the first time the family has spoken publicly after Ruiz was shot and killed by a Madison police officer Wednesday, July 22.

They're calling for accountability and a full independent investigation. 

Corey Ruiz's mom was emotional throughout the press conference as she spoke about her son, remembering him as an "exceptional guy." Family members said it's difficult to move on with their lives as they relive the moment Corey was shot every day.

 "People are saying, 'oh, but he's a criminal.' So what? He had a family. He had me," said Corey's daughter, Kah'liyah. 

"He was my love. He loved his daughter. He loved his family. He did not deserve to be taken out like that," Elsa Ruiz said. 

"There's already been so much negativity," said Veronica Ruiz. "And no one knows who he is."

Video captured by bystanders shows the moment several Madison police officer tried to detain Ruiz near the city's east side. Police say Ruiz had a knife and injured an officer. In the video, that same officer then shoots and kills Ruiz. 

Now, Ruiz's family has hired prominent civil rights attorney Ben Crump.

During their press conference, Crump called the shooting an "execution," calling it a personal nightmare for every Black parent. 

"They not only tackled him, not only tased him, not only kicked him, they shot him," Crump said. 

The Madison Police Department does not wear body cameras, and family members demanded that change. 

Madison's mayor said they will be part of the next executive budget. The state's Department of Criminal Investigations is now in charge of an independent investigation into the shooting.
