Firefighter injured after MAYDAY called during Somers house fire
CBS 58 SOMERS, Wis. (CBS 58) — A firefighter is recovering after suffering minor injuries during a house fire that prompted a MAYDAY call Tuesday morning in Kenosha County.
According to the Somers Fire Department, crews were dispatched around 8:30 a.m. to a structure fire in the 700 block of 16th Place in Somers. While responding, firefighters could see heavy black smoke from several miles away, prompting an early request for assistance from neighboring departments.
When crews arrived, they found a two-story home with heavy fire involvement at the front of the structure. Nearby homes were also threatened due to the intensity of the fire and their close proximity.
Firefighters spent several hours battling the blaze. During interior operations, a MAYDAY was declared after a firefighter was trapped by an interior collapse.
The firefighter was removed from the structure and transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.
No civilians were injured in the fire. Officials say the home sustained significant damage due to the amount of fire present before crews arrived.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
