First major snowstorm of winter arrives Monday night

Update*** The entire southeast Wisconsin viewing area is now under a Winter Storm Warning starting tomorrow at 6am. This replaces the Watch that several of our southeastern counties were previously under. This is now a more seamless approach to the story. The Advisory starts tonight at 9pm, then transitions to the Warning as the heavier snow unfolds.

The first part is the initial wave of snow where a Winter Weather Advisory is in place for all of southeast Wisconsin from 9 PM Monday through 6 AM Tuesday. This is for light snow but a few inches will already be on the ground in most communities by the time you wake up Tuesday morning.

The second part of the storm will be the more impactful part where a Winter Storm Warning has been issued from 6 AM Tuesday to 3 AM Wednesday for all of the southeastern WI counties for heavy snow.

Here's a timeline of the storm:

Snow starts to roll in after 9 PM Monday night and becomes steady during the early morning hours of Tuesday. 1-3" of snow can be expected by 6 AM Tuesday.

The heaviest part of the storm will be from 10 AM Tuesday to 8 PM where snow will quickly accumulate and road conditions will deteriorate.

The snow will wrap up Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. Another round of light snow is possible Wednesday evening.

By the time the snow wraps up Wednesday morning most of southeast will see a heavy, wet, slushy snow accumulating to 5-9". Lakeside will be the tricky part of the forecast with a warm Lake Michigan and warm air temperatures only accumulating to 2-5" there with maybe some rain at times.

The snow itself will be the biggest part of the storm impacts. The wind will also pick up during the storm with wind gusts to 25 or 30 mph so blowing and drifting snow may also be an issue. The morning commute on Tuesday won't be awful but the afternoon and evening commute will be pretty terrible.
