Fond du Lac Blades prep for synchronized skating competition in Scotland
BROOKFIELD, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Young skaters from around the world are preparing for a synchronized skating competition in Scotland this week, including a talented team from Fond du Lac.
The Fond du Lac Blades leave Monday, Jan. 22 to represent the United States in a two-day competition that starts on Friday.
They held one last practice in Brookfield and CBS 58 was there.
The team is based in Fond du Lac, but the Blades have skaters from all over the state. They're young, but they're seasoned and some of them are veterans of the international event.
"I've been skating for 11 years. I've been skating since I was about six years," said Melania Bachleitner, skater.
"For most of these kids, they would never get the opportunity individually. So to be able to do it as a group and it as a team is very exciting," said Jenny McMahon, head coach of the Fond du Lac Blades.
Members of the Blades team practice together three times a week, they also have to practice on their own.
It takes a lot of dedication, athleticism and timing, but when they get to the competition, there's a payoff. According to their head coach, it comes before they even start skating.
"The absolute moment when they announce our team and they announce, 'representing the United States of America,' even saying it gives me chills. So, it's just, it's a moment where I always tell the skaters before we hit the ice, please stop, take a breath and just listen," said McMahon.
The Fond du Lac Blades leave for Scotland. They'll compete Friday and Saturday at the junior level in the short and the long programs.
