Fond du Lac police respond to disturbance; subject dead, K-9 injured

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A Fond du Lac County sheriff K-9 is showing signs of recovery after being hurt in a shooting. 

Video posted by the sheriff's office on Facebook shows K-9 Iro walking to get his tennis ball while being held by people with towels. 

The sheriff's office said the dog's care team is working hard to help him on his road to recovery. 

The K-9 was shot over the weekend in Fond du Lac during an officer-involved shooting between a deputy and the suspected shooter.

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Fond du Lac police responded to a disturbance Saturday, Oct. 14, around 5:55 a.m., according to a press release.

The Fond du Lac Police Department and deputies of the Fond du Lac Sheriff's Office responded to the disturbance, located near Drury Place and Western Ave. Upon arrival, police encountered a male subject inside a vehicle. Police say after the vehicle was located, gunfire was exchanged between a sheriff's deputy and the subject. 

According to police, the subject sustained injuries and was given first aid. The subject was pronounced dead at the scene. 

A K-9 from the sheriff's office was shot and seriously wounded during the incident. The K-9 is continuing to receive critical care at a veterinarian hospital. The K-9 remains in serious but stable condition. 

No other members of the public or law enforcement were injured. 

According to police, the deputy has been placed on administrative leave. 

The Division of Criminal Investigation is leading an investigation on this incident.
