Former MPD officer found guilty in connection to in-custody death of Keishon Thomas

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A former Milwaukee police officer was found guilty of misconduct in office Thursday, Jan. 4, in connection to the in-custody death of Keishon Thomas.

Donald Krueger originally entered a plea of not guilty but changed his plea to "no contest" in court Thursday and a guilty conviction was entered. A charge of abuse of residents of penal facilities was dismissed.

Twenty-year-old Keishon Thomas died at Milwaukee Police Department District 5 on Feb. 23, 2022, after being taken into custody following a traffic violation.

A criminal complaint said Thomas admitted to ingesting drugs before his arrest. His cause of death was determined to be acute mixed drug intoxication.

The complaint says Krueger neglected Thomas by failing to give him medical attention despite seeing him dry heave multiple times and being informed that he had recently ingested multiple controlled substances.

Krueger retired in November of 2022.

A sentencing hearing is scheduled for March 11.
