Former MPS Board member facing multiple felony charges
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A former Milwaukee school board member is now facing multiple felony charges. Aisha Carr was charged Monday by Milwaukee County prosecutors, who accuse her of representing a district in which she did not live.
A criminal complaint filed states Carr pledged to move into the Milwaukee Board of School Directors' fourth district shortly after being elected in April of 2021.
However, voting records and an interview with her old landlord revealed Carr continued to live outside the district for nearly two more years. Carr had been living near the intersection of N. 2nd St. and W. Hadley St.
After the 2021 spring election, Carr filed paperwork with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation changing her address to a home near N. 22nd St. and W. Brown St., placing her in the district she represented.
Prosecutors said a review of Carr's voting history through the spring of 2023 found she continued voting at a polling place that matched her address during the campaign. The owner of that property told investigators Carr lived there until March 2023.
Carr did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment Monday.
Prosecutors are now charging Carr with misconduct in office, as well as theft, since she collected an MPS salary of nearly $19,000 a year while not living in the district she represented. If convicted on both counts, Carr faces a maximum sentence of 13.5 years in prison.
Carr resigned from the board last month. She'd previously been an outspoken critic of the $252 million April referendum, which narrowly passed.
Carr also had been the subject of a closed session meeting of the board in April. At that time, Carr had been accused of placing a recording device in the office of former Superintendent Keith Posley. Carr admitted to telling an MPS whistleblower she'd discussed the recording device, but claims it was done as a decoy to see if she could trust the whistleblower.
Her seat is still vacant.
