WEST ALLIS, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Community members spent the day supporting local veterans during a fundraiser at Rupena’s grocery store.
“Rupena’s feels strongly about our veterans. We have a lot that come in and sit down have coffee, shop. We appreciate all of them for what they have done,” said Maria Rupena, store owner.
Rupena’s is partnering with Jon-profit Mission 22 on Saturday, Oct. 5 to help local veterans and raise awareness about mental health challenges they face.
Lionel Garcia is coordinating the event.
“Today we’ve got a fundraiser and food donation we’re doing here at Rupena’s. Right now, we’ve got a bunch of burgers and hot dogs being supplied. They were super awesome. We’re working together with this," he said.
The day is dedicated to raising awareness and money for veterans.
“We’ve got non-perishable food items we’re getting hopefully from everyone around and we’re also going to do hygiene products, deodorant, soap, that kind of thing to give it to these guys at the Milwaukee Soldier’s Home,” he said. Garcia says it’s important for the community to pitch in and provide support to the heroes of our country.
“We’re trying to spread awareness for mental health, give veterans resources, spread awareness for mentos health. Give veterans resources for jobs,” he said.
Rupena’s is also partnering in the food drive to benefit Milwaukee Soldier’s Home. She hopes these efforts continue to bring the community together.
