Giannis Antetokounmpo, Bobby Portis introduced by Miami Heat
WFOR MIAMI (CBS 58) — At the Kaseya Center, home of the Miami Heat, Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis Jr. were officially introduced as the team's newest members.
"I always had huge respect for the Miami Heat organization," said Antetokounmpo, speaking about the organization's culture. "In order for me to go to the next level, I got to get out of my comfort zone, and I feel like Miami was the place to be."
"It was a no-brainer. I wanted to be here. I'm excited to be here. I just want to get to work."
"I was born to be a Heatle," said Portis Jr. "My favorite team growing up."
Antetokounmpo will wear a different jersey for the first time in his NBA career, taking No. 7 with the Heat.
During his time in Milwaukee, Antetokounmpo won an NBA championship, was named NBA Finals MVP, won two NBA MVP awards, earned Defensive Player of the Year honors and was named to the NBA's 75th Anniversary Team.
"I feel like 34 holds so much weight and has so much history. And out of respect to the organization that drafted me and that I played for 13 years, I decided to leave that number there and start a new chapter," said Antetokounmpo. "It's almost like having closure for me mentally and emotionally."
"I have so much respect for [the Bucks], I hope they have respect for me for all the things that I've done in that city."
Antetokounmpo spent his entire NBA career with the Milwaukee Bucks, while Portis Jr. played six seasons in Milwaukee. The two were teammates during the Bucks' 2021 NBA championship run.
"It's super important that I do give grace to the Milwaukee Bucks in 2020," said Portis Jr. "I told him (Giannis), 'I can help you guys win a chip,' and six months later we won the chip. It was very much career-changing for me."
Both players said they want to win another championship.
"One of my goals is to win another championship. I really want to do it," said Antetokounmpo. "I feel like this is the best route for me to do that, so I'm excited for it."
"I'm not just some throw-in piece. I ain't that. From day one they are going to get a competitor," said Portis Jr. "I play hard. I give 110% every game. I play every game."
